The Harry B. and Leona M.
Helmsley Trust awards funds to construct 10 housing units for homeless fathers
with children and homeless mothers with older sons
The Harry B. and Leona M. Helmsley Trust has awarded
Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries $200,000 to construct space to house up to ten
homeless fathers with children and homeless mothers with older boys. Over the
course of the next five years, these renovations will allow us to provide
family-conducive space and quality services for 250 homeless people.
Male-headed households and older homeless boys find it
difficult to find accommodations in their family unit in shelters because they
are designed with communal showers for women. Splitting up an otherwise intact
family, adds further trauma and difficulty to an already difficult situation.
The Helmsley Trust award will allow DRMM to renovate a floor of one of its
buildings to provide each family with separate and secure space for the family
unit as well as to provide private sleeping and bathing facilities.
The first clients will be admitted when renovations are completed
by Summer 2011. Whether the shelter we provide is only needed for two weeks to
thirty days or for a much longer period (up to two years), we expect that all
residents will have their basic health status stabilized; 45% will find or
return to employment; and at least 75% will discharge to stable, permanent
housing.
