Imagine
being a child, doing all of the things that
children enjoy - going to school, making
friends, playing in the schoolyard - but
with one big difference: you have no place
to call home. Sounds like an incredibly sad
situation, doesn’t it? Well, that is the
reality for thousands of children and youths
across the country. In Detroit alone, there
are an estimated 3,540 homeless students.
Across the state of Michigan about 20,000
students are homeless, according to the
state
Department of Education. I have to
believe there are even more children out
there whose parents are ashamed to report to
the school system that they are homeless.

“Paula” is getting a second chance at living
a productive and successful life. While
recovering from a longtime drug addiction,
Paula completed a customer service class at
the
Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries
conducted in partnership with
Wayne County Community College District.
She learned valuable computer skills and
landed a housekeeping job at a local hotel.
“As I started coming to customer service
class, I started seeing the positive things
in it that I can use to advance in
employment — how to dress for a job
interview, how to act on the job interview
and how to maintain a positive attitude,”
she says.
Paula began using drugs at the age of 14.
From marijuana to alcohol to cocaine,
Paula’s life spiraled out of control. She
was 42-years-old when she found the Detroit
Rescue Mission. “I didn’t like myself and I
was very depressed when I came in the
program, but I’m very positive today,” she
says. “Just to know that somebody cares and
wants to see you make it, that’s what the
Mission means to me. It gave me hope. It
saved my life, literally."

It’s hard to believe that
Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries (DRMM)
volunteer Esther Sweeney is 99-years-old.
The spry Lincoln Park resident will
celebrate her 100th birthday in 2009, the
same year that DRMM turns 100. In fact,
Esther knew of the Stucky family who founded
the Detroit Rescue Mission.
Through the years, Esther was an avid
seamstress and made lots of blankets, quilts
and baby clothes for the men, women and
children served by DRMM. “I guess I put
myself in the place of the people at the
Mission who need help. It could be me. It
could be my children. They’re my neighbors.”
